The right car tires for summer and winter

Each new season requires a pair of durable and quality-assured tires. During the spring, we change from winter to summer tires. In the fall, we go back to winter tires.

When should I have winter tires?

In Sweden, all cars must have been equipped with winter tires by December 1 each year. The requirement for winter tires extends until the end of March. This can vary from year to year and is regulated by the Winter Tire Act.

Winter tires include studded tires and non-studded friction tires. To be approved, your winter tires must have a tread depth of at least 3 millimeters. You may drive with studded tires from 1 October to 15 April. These dates may change depending on winter road conditions. Friction tires can be used during the same period and also work for the rest of the year. Keep in mind, however, that these wear out much faster during the summer and have poorer road characteristics in the heat. We recommend always changing to summer tires even if you have friction tires.

Studded tires or studless tires?

Which tires suit you may depend on the climate where you live and how you can plan your driving. There are two types of winter tires, studded tires and friction tires. Both variants have their advantages. Friction tires have lower rolling resistance, lower noise level and wear less on our roads, which is good both economically and environmentally. The studded tires have their big advantage in creating good grip on icy roads. Ask us and we will help you with your tire choice.

Nordic tires

For those of you who live in a colder climate, we always recommend Nordic tires. The tracking on Nordic tires is zigzag and is adapted to a colder climate with packed snow and freezing temperatures. Nordic tires are superior to Central European tires when it comes to driving on ice, snow and slippery surfaces.

Summer tires

As the owner of a car, you must have changed to summer tires by April 15 each year at the latest. Your tires must have a tread depth of at least 1.6 millimeters. Keep in mind that a smaller tread depth increases the risk of aquaplaning.

In northern Sweden, the cold nights and longer winter road conditions mean that we usually have winter tires longer than April 15. This is regulated by the Swedish Transport Agency.

Balancing

Tire balancing is done in case of symptoms of imbalance to guarantee safe and comfortable driving. Potential imbalance in the tires affects the steering and also leads to higher wear on, for example, rubber and suspension. Feel free to take the help of a professional car workshop for both tire changes and if you experience instability. At Niemi Bil, we use mechanical technology to measure the balance in each tire and then take appropriate measures.
