5 Crazy Cars

five crazy cars

If you follow Niemi Bil on social media, you may have seen that we recently took a look at 5 crazy cars from history. If not, you can find that video here here on our InstagramBut there are of course more than five cars that fit on that list, so here we're going to take a look at some more truly unique cars!

1. General Motors Firebird I

Is it an airplane? Is it a spaceship? No, it's the General Motors Firebird! The concept car, because General Motors actually made a real car that was also called the Firebird. This version was a Pontiac which was also pretty cool in itself, but not quite on the same level as the concept cars!

2. Oscar Mayer's "Wienermobile"

It may have been created for advertising purposes, but it's hard to forget. Maybe you could even call it iconic? A few exist or have existed over the years, and they're all built on Isuzu trucks with 6-liter V8s from Chevrolet. Maybe there's a little bit of a "ketchup effect" when you press the gas pedal... Did you know that the drivers of these hot dog trucks are called "Hotdoggers?" Strange.

3. Leyat Helica

If you follow “The Grand Tour” on Amazon Prime, you’ve probably already experienced the terror of the third car on this list. These days, car manufacturers place a lot of emphasis on pedestrian safety, but that may NOT have been a factor in the 1920s when the (presumably wildly insane) Frenchman Marcel Leyat designed this rolling hand blender. The propeller was powered by a Harley Davidson engine and the body was built of plywood. Because, as you know, a bad idea rarely comes alone.

4. “The Popemobile”

The Pope's mobile in Swedish has come in several different forms. It has been a Jeep a couple of times, but usually a Mercedes of some kind. Because the Pope has good taste in cars, apparently. Common to all (and most distinctive) is of course the large aquarium-like protective device from which the Pope looks out at the crowds, with bulletproof glass that keeps the Pope safe. Why he needs bulletproof glass when he has God's protection and blessing I will not speculate here.

5. Plymouth Prowler

A real Hotrod feel was actually available straight from the factory for a while around the turn of the millennium, from Plymouth for a while and later from Chrysler (it was a bit shaky around classic American car brands there for a while). Designed to imitate a Ford hot rod from the 30s, the Prowler offered iconic style and… not much else really (there's a reason they're not made anymore). With steering from Chrysler minivans and shock absorbers from a Dodge Viper. The fact that you couldn't fit more than a small suitcase in the trunk is another factor in the Prowler's… let's say “limited” success.
