When should you change your tires?

Here you can read about the dates that are important to keep in mind when booking your tire changes. This, along with the tread depth, is what you should look for when it's time to change tires.

Legal requirements for tread depth for winter tires: At least 3 millimeters
Legal requirements for tread depth for summer tires: At least 1.6 millimeters

Risks of low tread depth include longer braking distances, poorer grip on snow and ice, aquaplaning, increased risk of skidding, etc. Making sure you have the right tires in good condition is a great way to keep yourself and your fellow road users safe!

Switch to winter tires – keep an eye on these dates

  • You must use winter tires in winter road conditions between December 1 – March 31.
  • You may use studded tires during the time period October 1 – April 15.
  • It is not allowed to use studded tires during the period between 16 April – September 30, if it is not or is not expected to be winter road conditions.

Changing to summer tires – the dates that apply

  • Between the 16 April – September 30 must you should use summer tires (unless winter road conditions are expected).

Switching to winter tires – tips to consider

In Sweden, all cars should have been equipped with winter tires no later than December 1 every year and sit on until it March 31.

Here are some important things to consider when switching to winter tires:

  1. Timing is crucial: Make sure to change to winter tires well in advance of the first snowfall of the winter. Don't wait until the last minute, as demand for tires and garages can be high.

  2. Correct dimensions: If you buy the tires yourself, make sure that the winter tires you buy have the correct dimensions and are compatible with your car. You can find the dimensions in your car's owner's manual or on the side of the tires that are already on your car. You can also contact us if you need help.

  3. Pattern depth: The legal requirement is a minimum of 3 millimeters on winter tires, but general advice is to have at least 4 millimeters of tread depth on winter tires to ensure good grip on snow and ice.

  4. Put the best tires on the back: The tires with the best tread depth should be mounted at the rear of the vehicle. This reduces the risk of skidding and applies to both rear- and front-wheel drive cars.

Switching to summer tires – tips to consider

In Sweden, all cars must be equipped with winter tires by December 1st of each year and remain on until March 31st.

Here are some important things to consider when switching to winter tires:

  1. : Make sure to change to winter tires well in advance of the first snowfall of the winter.

  3. Pattern depth: Before changing to summer tires, inspect them carefully. Make sure there are no visible damages or cracks on the rubber and that the tread depth is sufficient (at least 1.6 millimeters by law).

  4. Put the best tires on the back: The tires with the best tread depth should be mounted at the rear of the vehicle. This reduces the risk of skidding and applies to both rear- and front-wheel drive cars.
